Objectives
The Brown Hyena Research Project exists since 1997 and has been registered as a Namibian non-profit organisation in 2002.
The purpose of the Brown Hyena Research Project is:
To conduct scientific research on the brown hyena and other carnivores in their natural environment to ensure the long-term conservation and survival of free-ranging brown hyenas and other carnivores and their ecosystem and to develop strategies for the conservation of brown hyenas and other carnivores and their habitats and all objects ancillary thereto.

The primary objectives are, but are not limited to:
- To conduct scientific research and monitoring of brown hyenas and other carnivores in Namibia.
- To develop techniques to implement the long-term monitoring of brown hyena and other carnivore densities and distribution.
- To develop and implement appropriate management plans for brown hyenas and other carnivores.
- To develop mitigation strategies where required to address conflict between people and carnivores.
- To provide relevant information, raise awareness and promote appropriate environmental education.
- To provide training and build capacity among Namibians to manage and conserve carnivores.
- To make recommendations regarding existing and future developments in the brown hyena's and other carnivore's habitat.
- To assist and collaborate with the relevant governmental organisations and other stakeholders towards the long-term conservation of brown hyenas and other carnivores.
- To assist the relevant governmental organisations as required in the implementation and monitoring of carnivore policies in respect of free-ranging populations.
- To cooperate with other organisations (scientific and educational) and individuals with common interest and objectives locally and abroad to better promote and protect the brown hyena and other carnivores.
- To collaborate with the relevant governmental organisations to support the objectives and policies of the organisation relating to the management and conservation of brown hyenas and other carnivores.
- To engage in such other activities as may contribute to the long-term survival and conservation of Namibia's free-ranging carnivores and their habitats.
- To promote comparative studies of hyena morphology, behaviour and ecology through collaborative research.
- To ensure regular publication, both scientific and popular, of all research and conservation activities of the Trust.
- To raise funds for brown hyena and other carnivore research, conservation and management including their habitat.
